Self-Help Groups (SHGs) are small voluntary association of people from the same socio-economic background with a purpose of solving their common problems through self-help and mutual help. In other words, it is an association of people who have common problems that cannot be solved individually, but only through joint action.

VIDIYAL has got four tier SHG management. Women members join in self help groups. These self help groups from Village (or Ward) Level Federations. These VLFs join and form Panchayath Level Federations. Apart from these four levels, there is VIDIVELLI, that crosses the panchayath boundaries and unit all SHGs promoted by VIDIYAL. The following are the content of discussions held in regular and periodical group meetings.

Review how individual loan size can increase
Discuss the importance of savings
Review the passbook procedures
Explain the procedures for making payments and deposits
Discuss the steps to take if there is ever a question about money management
Collect savings

The groups function on democratic principles.
